Product Description

PAT Air Mass Meter: Your Reliable Mass Air Flow Sensor

Positioned between your air filter and throttle body, the PAT Air Mass Meter is a vital component of your engine management system. It gauges the volume of incoming air and often incorporates the Intake Air Temperature Sensor (ATS) as well. The information it gathers assists your engine's ECU in achieving the correct fuel mix, ignition timing, and occasionally, transmission shifting.

How Does It Function?

  • Within the Mass Air Flow Sensor, there exists a small, electrically heated wire. Another sensor in close proximity monitors the wire's temperature.
  • At idle, minimal air flows over the wire, thus requiring low electrical energy to maintain the wire's heat (approximately 200 degrees Celsius).
  • When the throttle is opened, the rush of air cools the wire. To restore the temperature, more electricity is channelled through – the greater the airflow, the more power is required. This electric current directly signifies airflow volume, providing your ECU with the necessary data to accurately inject the appropriate amount of fuel.

Potential Issues

  • A defective Mass Air Flow Sensor can lead to numerous issues: rough idle, lethargic performance, black exhaust smoke, poor fuel economy – you may even see a warning light on your dashboard.
  • The primary issue is contamination of the hot wire. Accumulation of dust, dirt, or oil residue can prevent accurate airflow readings. While newer Mass Air Flow Sensors are designed to mitigate this problem, they are not invincible. Oily aftermarket air filters are a frequent source of contamination.

Identifying the Problem

  • Examine the sensor's signal with the appropriate scan tool or oscilloscope and compare it to the specifications for your vehicle.
  • Warning codes on your dashboard can also suggest a problem (be aware of codes starting with P0068, P0100, P0101, P0102, P0103, P0104).
  • Don't overlook the basics! Intake leaks or faulty wiring can also affect the Mass Air Flow Sensor.

About this brand

Note: This item may not come in the manufacturers original packaging

Unfortunately, over the past few years, the Australian aftermarket has seen a significant increase in lower quality EFI and Engine Management products. It is easy for consumers and even technicians to be confused as to the quality of the products in the market. Because the issues experienced by workshops installing low quality parts can include safety, expensive repairs and damage to your reputation an increased request for quality products has become evident in the aftermarket.

Sometimes products shipped from leading manufacturers overseas require repackaging in Australia. In these cases we have begun to use a new range of premium packaging to enable easy identification of the premium brand or genuine product. Where required products from leading manufacturers including Pierburg, Bosch, Delphi, VDO, Denso, Valeo, Hitachi, VDO, TI Automotive, Walbro, Bougicord, FAE, Standard Motor Products, TE Automotive, Hella, Bremi and others may be supplied in the new PAT Premium Range packaging, giving you peace of mind that a quality brand product is enclosed.

Some PAT branded products may also be in their original packaging. Due to the changing nature of the supply chains around the world, our supplier sometimes will change suppliers. For example a product that used to be supplied as a Hitachi product might now be a Bosch brand. In all cases they will be well known OE type products as per the above paragraph.
