PAT Air Mass Meter Insert - Your Engine Management Solution

Ensuring the smooth operation of your vehicle's engine management system, the PAT Air Mass Meter Insert is a crucial component. Positioned between the air filter and throttle body, this Mass Air Flow Sensor measures incoming air and often incorporates the Intake Air Temperature Sensor (ATS). The data collected by this sensor assists your engine's ECU in achieving the correct fuel mix, ignition timing, and sometimes even transmission shifting.

How Does the PAT Air Mass Meter Insert Work?

Inside the Mass Air Flow Sensor is a small, electrically heated wire. Another sensor nearby monitors the wire's temperature.
At idle, minimal air flows over the wire, keeping electrical needs low to maintain the wire's heat (around 200 degrees Celsius).
When the throttle is opened, the surge of air cools the wire. To restore the temperature, more electricity is sent through. The greater the airflow, the more power is needed. This electric current directly represents airflow volume, providing your ECU with the information it needs to accurately inject the right amount of fuel.

What Can Go Wrong with the PAT Air Mass Meter Insert?

A faulty Mass Air Flow Sensor can cause numerous issues: rough idle, sluggish performance, black exhaust smoke, poor fuel economy – you might even get a warning light on your dash.
The main issue is contamination of the hot wire. Dust, dirt, or oil gunk builds up, making accurate airflow readings impossible. While newer Mass Air Flow Sensors are designed to reduce this issue, they're not foolproof. Oily aftermarket air filters are a common contamination source.

Diagnosing the Problem

Check the sensor's signal with the appropriate scan tool or oscilloscope and compare it to specs for your vehicle.
Warning codes on your dash can also indicate a problem (look out for codes starting with P0068, P0100, P0101, P0102, P0103, P0104).
Don't forget the basics! Intake leaks or faulty wiring can also affect the Mass Air Flow Sensor.
