Dayco Automatic Belt Tensioner — APV3188
The Dayco APV3188 is an engine automatic belt tensioner, designed to maintain constant tension on serpentine belt drives.
A serpentine belt drive uses a single belt to power most, if not all, of the engine's accessories. To maintain the proper tension throughout that drive, an automatic spring-loaded tensioner is built into the drive system geometry.
Why the tension matters
Dayco's Automatic Belt Tensioner features a patented flat spring design, engineered to provide less variation in tension across the operating range.
- Too much tension, as when a new belt is installed, risks premature accessory bearing failure. The flat spring design reduces that risk.
- Too little tension, as the belt begins to stretch and wear, causes belt squeal, slippage and poor accessory performance. The flat spring design lessens that risk too.
Construction
- A Teflon® strip wound within the spring resists abrasion, and the flat spring itself is coated to resist rust.
- A heavy-duty cast aluminium spring case resists cracking and fatigue.
- The heavy-duty cast aluminium arm offers additional strength and less distortion.
- An aluminium retainer ring locks the spring case and arm together and seals against corrosion.
- A thermoplastic rubber spring slot plug keeps out harmful contaminants.
- Lubricated nylon pivot tube and spring bushings promote quieter performance.
- A rubber O-ring seals against dust and grime.
- The zinc coated mounting bolt resists rust, and is concentric for a more even degree of constant tension.
- Where the application demands, a steel locator pin and a steel pivot tube provide additional strength for critical torque requirements.
- Available with either a glass-filled polymer or steel pulley with dust cover.
