PAT Air Mass Meter: The Essential Engine Management Component

Positioned between the air filter and throttle body, the PAT Air Mass Meter plays a pivotal role in your engine management system. It gauges the volume of incoming air and often incorporates the Intake Air Temperature Sensor (ATS). The data it gathers assists your engine's ECU in determining the correct fuel mix, ignition timing, and occasionally, transmission shifting.

Functionality of the PAT Air Mass Meter

  • Contains a small, electrically heated wire that measures air flow.
  • Another sensor monitors the wire's temperature, adjusting electrical needs based on air flow.
  • The electric current directly represents airflow volume, providing your ECU with the necessary information to accurately inject the right amount of fuel.

Potential Issues

  • A faulty Air Mass Meter can lead to rough idle, sluggish performance, black exhaust smoke, poor fuel economy, and even a warning light on your dashboard.
  • The primary issue is contamination of the hot wire due to dust, dirt, or oil build-up, which hinders accurate airflow readings.
  • While newer models are designed to reduce this problem, they are not immune. Oily aftermarket air filters are a common source of contamination.

Diagnosing the Problem

  • Check the sensor's signal with the appropriate scan tool or oscilloscope and compare it to your vehicle's specifications.
  • Warning codes on your dashboard can also indicate a problem (look out for codes starting with P0068, P0100, P0101, P0102, P0103, P0104).
  • Basic issues such as intake leaks or faulty wiring can also affect the Air Mass Meter.

Packaging note: PAT products may be supplied in PAT Premium packaging instead of the manufacturer's original box.

PAT sources EFI and engine-management parts from established OE-type manufacturers and repackages some of them in Australia. The manufacturer inside can change between batches as supply changes — for example, a part once made by Hitachi may now come from Bosch. Every unit is an OE-type part from a recognised manufacturer.

Packaging: Manufacturers periodically update their packaging and labelling. You may receive the current or a previous design — the product, formulation and part number are unchanged.

Fitment (vehicle-specific products): Vehicle fitment is based on manufacturer and supplier catalogue data and is kept as accurate as possible, but vehicle catalogues are not perfect. Some models had more than one part fitted depending on build date, engine, or component size/variant, and parts on older vehicles may have been replaced with non-original or different-style components.

Before you buy, compare the product images with the part currently fitted to your vehicle — check shape, size, connectors and mounting points. If the part on your vehicle looks different, please contact us before purchasing. It is the buyer's responsibility to confirm the part suits their vehicle before purchasing.

Not sure? Message us with your vehicle's registration number and state (preferred), or full VIN/build details, and we'll do our best to confirm fitment before you buy.

Parts returned because they do not suit the vehicle, where the listing matches the manufacturer's catalogue, are treated as a change of mind and must be unused, uninstalled and in original packaging. Nothing in this notice affects your rights under the Australian Consumer Law.
