The expansion tank is an essential component of the cooling system in your vehicle. Unlike the radiator, the expansion tank is always under pressure and houses the pressure cap. It is typically positioned at the highest point in the cooling system.

As the coolant circulates through the system, it passes through the expansion tank. The hot coolant releases pressure, filling the top half of the tank. This pressure acts as a force to push the coolant back into the system.

Over time, expansion tanks can become discoloured, brittle, contaminated with sludge, or even break. When this happens, immediate replacement is necessary to ensure the cooling system continues to operate effectively.
