PAT Air Mass Meter: Your Reliable Mass Air Flow Sensor
Positioned between your air filter and throttle body, the PAT Air Mass Meter is a vital component of your engine management system. It accurately measures incoming air and often incorporates the Intake Air Temperature Sensor (ATS). The data it gathers assists your engine's ECU in achieving the correct fuel mix, ignition timing, and in some cases, transmission shifting.
How Does It Work?
- Within the PAT Air Mass Meter, there's a small, electrically heated wire. Another sensor nearby monitors the wire's temperature.
- At idle, minimal air flows over the wire, keeping electrical needs low to maintain the wire's heat (around 200 degrees Celsius).
- When the throttle is opened, the rush of air cools the wire. To restore the temperature, more electricity is sent through – the greater the airflow, the more power is required. This electric current directly represents airflow volume, providing your ECU with the information it needs to accurately inject the correct amount of fuel.
What Can Go Wrong?
- A faulty PAT Air Mass Meter can cause a range of issues: rough idle, sluggish performance, black exhaust smoke, poor fuel economy – you might even see a warning light on your dash.
- The main issue is contamination of the hot wire. Dust, dirt, or oil gunk can build up, making accurate airflow readings impossible. While newer PAT Air Mass Meters are designed to reduce this issue, they're not invincible. Oily aftermarket air filters are a common source of contamination.
Diagnosing the Problem
- Check the sensor's signal with the appropriate scan tool or oscilloscope and compare it to specs for your vehicle.
- Warning codes on your dash can also indicate a problem (look out for codes starting with P0068, P0100, P0101, P0102, P0103, P0104).
- Don't overlook the basics! Intake leaks or faulty wiring can also affect the PAT Air Mass Meter.

Packaging note: PAT products may be supplied in PAT Premium packaging instead of the manufacturer's original box.
PAT sources EFI and engine-management parts from established OE-type manufacturers and repackages some of them in Australia. The manufacturer inside can change between batches as supply changes — for example, a part once made by Hitachi may now come from Bosch. Every unit is an OE-type part from a recognised manufacturer.
Packaging: Manufacturers periodically update their packaging and labelling. You may receive the current or a previous design — the product, formulation and part number are unchanged.
Fitment (vehicle-specific products): Vehicle fitment is based on manufacturer and supplier catalogue data and is kept as accurate as possible, but vehicle catalogues are not perfect. Some models had more than one part fitted depending on build date, engine, or component size/variant, and parts on older vehicles may have been replaced with non-original or different-style components.
Before you buy, compare the product images with the part currently fitted to your vehicle — check shape, size, connectors and mounting points. If the part on your vehicle looks different, please contact us before purchasing. It is the buyer's responsibility to confirm the part suits their vehicle before purchasing.
Not sure? Message us with your vehicle's registration number and state (preferred), or full VIN/build details, and we'll do our best to confirm fitment before you buy.
Parts returned because they do not suit the vehicle, where the listing matches the manufacturer's catalogue, are treated as a change of mind and must be unused, uninstalled and in original packaging. Nothing in this notice affects your rights under the Australian Consumer Law.
