PAT Air Mass Meter: The Essential Engine Management Component
Positioned between your air filter and throttle body, the PAT Air Mass Meter is a vital component of your engine management system. It measures the incoming air and often incorporates the Intake Air Temperature Sensor (ATS). The data it gathers assists your engine's ECU in achieving the correct fuel mix, ignition timing, and sometimes even transmission shifting.
- Inside the Air Mass Meter, there's a small, electrically heated wire. Another sensor nearby monitors the wire's temperature. At idle, minimal air flows over the wire, keeping electrical needs low to maintain the wire's heat (around 200 degrees Celsius). But when the throttle is opened, the surge of air cools the wire. To restore the temperature, more electricity is sent through – and the greater the airflow, the more power is needed. This electric current directly represents airflow volume, providing your ECU with the information it needs to accurately inject the correct amount of fuel.
- A faulty Air Mass Meter can cause a range of issues: rough idle, sluggish performance, black exhaust smoke, poor fuel economy – you might even get a warning light on your dash. The main issue is contamination of the hot wire. Dust, dirt, or oil gunk builds up, making accurate airflow readings impossible. While newer Air Mass Meters are designed to reduce this issue, they're not infallible. Oily aftermarket air filters are a common contamination source.
- To diagnose the problem, check the sensor's signal with the appropriate scan tool or oscilloscope and compare it to specs for your vehicle. Warning codes on your dash can also indicate a problem (look out for codes starting with P0068, P0100, P0101, P0102, P0103, P0104). Don't forget the basics! Intake leaks or dodgy wiring can also affect the Air Mass Meter.
- PAT Emission offers over 340 top-quality Air Flow Meters and sensors, covering millions of vehicles across Australia and New Zealand. When you choose PAT, you receive parts built to your car manufacturer's standards for the perfect fit and function.
Note: For correct fitment ensure the vehicle is listed in the compatibility list AND read any notes associated with the product. If there are no vehicle details listed, please send a message.

Packaging note: PAT products may be supplied in PAT Premium packaging instead of the manufacturer's original box.
PAT sources EFI and engine-management parts from established OE-type manufacturers and repackages some of them in Australia. The manufacturer inside can change between batches as supply changes — for example, a part once made by Hitachi may now come from Bosch. Every unit is an OE-type part from a recognised manufacturer.
Packaging: Manufacturers periodically update their packaging and labelling. You may receive the current or a previous design — the product, formulation and part number are unchanged.
Fitment (vehicle-specific products): For products listed to suit a specific vehicle, our fitment data is kept as accurate as possible, but vehicle catalogues are not perfect. Some models had more than one part fitted depending on build date, engine, or component size/variant. It is the buyer's responsibility to confirm the part suits their vehicle before purchasing. If you have any doubt, please message us with your vehicle's registration number and state (preferred), or full VIN/build details, and we'll do our best to confirm before you buy.
